Gloria Yu

Gloria is currently studying piano at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and has been playing for 14 years. She has sound foundations and knowledge of repertoire and techniques in classical piano, and this is testified by her attainment of the AmusA (Associate in Music, Piano) in 2018.

Other than solo performance, she has been involved in playing in various ensemble and group contexts, and through these experiences over the years she has come to appreciate the piano as a versatile, stylistically all-encompassing instrument. She has accompanied solo instrumentalists, vocalists as well as choirs, played in piano duets and she also has extensive experience in playing musicals – having played in everything from Les Miserables to Spamalot.

Since being introduced to the world of band and ensemble music in high school, Gloria made the decision to pursue music. She completed the Jazz and Improvisation short course at the VCA in 2018, learning not only essential jazz standards, but also skills of ensemble playing such as cooperating and complimenting other musicians. She also plays viola and orchestral percussion in orchestras. These diverse musical experiences fostered her interest in composition, some of which has been played by Carey Baptist Grammar School’s orchestra on their international tour to China in 2019. She also occasionally includes her compositions in her own recital performances.

With these diverse forays into music and the things she has learned from it, it is Gloria’s goal in teaching to inspire others to enjoy playing, listening to and creating music.
